A template for accurately gauging the spacing of string slots in the top nut

Place the tape across the gauge so that the E string positions coincide with the two outermost lines. For a staggered spacing, which feels a little more natural because it takes account of the thickness of the strings, angle the tape slightly as shown by the red line, but if you prefer an even spacing, keep it perpendicular.

Mark the position of the intermediate strings on the tape and transfer these to the nut.

A well known luthiers supplier will sell you a nut spacing rule for a sum of a few dollars.

On the other hand, you can have this for nothing. Don't say I never give you anything...

It's a template for a nut spacing gauge that I devised in around 1977.

Print it out and stick it to a piece of plastic card with some spray mount.

Decide on your E-E' string separation at the nut. Mark these on a piece of masking tape.

Caveat: Cutting and dressing a nut is a highly skilled procedure; this tool is aimed at professional luthiers who know how to use it and do the job properly. I strongly recommend that you leave the work of cutting and fitting a nut to a skilled professional.
